Deflection is often used in arguments as a way to shift focus away from oneself and onto another person or issue. People commonly divert the pressure from themselves by changing the subject, pointing out someone else’s flaws to distract from the main issue at hand. One of the most common examples of deflection is when someone changes the subject in the middle of an argument. Specifically, if their behavior is called into question, the deflector will redirect the conversation to focus on something the other person did wrong taking you down a bunny trail. A way to remember this is to visualize the person “Releasing Rabbits” At that moment you have to decide, “AM I going to run after the Rabbits?” or stay focused on the topic at hand. The best way to do this is to Remain calm and neutral. Avoid becoming defensive, accusatory, or critical in response to deflection. Gently redirect the conversation back to the original topicPossibly say, “I am sorry you feel that way but regardless and get back to the original topic.” Or “maybe we can discuss that later but regardless this is what we are talking about now.” #releasingrabbits, #deflection, #stayintopic, #changingthesubject,
