Today’s sketch are hip huggers. Basically my hip huggers, or what I remember what they looked like. I am a jeans girl through and through, and I’ve told my girls, when I die, bury me in my jeans. I am just so much more comfortable in denim. In elementary and 7th grade, the dress code was dresses only. Dresses with shorts under them if you wanted to swing on the jungle-gym. 7th grade was a very strict dress code of only dresses, no more than 3” above the knee, and trust me, the school counselor measured it. If it was a bit too short, your mother was called and you were sent home. 8th grade, the dress code changed and we were allowed to wear pant suits, matching pant suits. They could not be mix-n-match, they had to be a set. Finally, 9th grade and the matchy-matchy rule was tossed out. About that time the hippy generation, Woodstock was upon us and I was all in, dress code wise, long hair you ironed to straighten, barefoot, you get the picture. Let’s be clear though, I was NOT the free love and acid kind of girl either, I was an all natural girl. My biggest influencer was my cousin Vicki, who lived in the big city of Tulsa. She was so cool and introduced me to hip hugger jeans. I bought my first pair at the army surplus store, Navy jeans, and a wide leather black belt with brass rings. Mother made my sister and I a pair, with RUFFLE layers once. They were NOT so cool. My denim ones were my favorite and I wore them out, literally. They drug the ground, were tattered, torn and dirty, just the way I liked them. I quickly had to replace them as they were so bad, but they were cheap, like $5. My second pair I embroidered flowers on the wide bells and my initials on the back pocket, C B, of course that earned me the nickname, Cute Butt. To add to my ensemble was the no bra halter top. Of course you couldn’t wear them to school. I think I had better jeans or pants for school than my tatters. I so loved the clothes of that time, hip huggers, halter tops, and peasant blouses. It took me decades to let go of the need to have loose legged jeans. #dailysketch #hiphuggerjeansdays
